How the ideal partner calculator works
Every criterion you set is matched against a published distribution for the country you chose, then combined. Age comes from the census age-by-sex table, height from measured CDC NHANES data, income and education from census income and educational attainment tables (using the joint income-by-education distribution where it exists, so a "graduate degree and $100k+" combination isn't double counted), and relationship status from census marital-status data.
The result is the share of adults of that gender who satisfy everything at once — which is why adding a fourth or fifth criterion shrinks the number far faster than people expect. A partner who is in the top 30% on three independent traits is not in the top 30% overall; they're closer to the top 3%.
Why "1 in 39" isn't bad news
A rare match is not an impossible one. One in a thousand still means tens of thousands of people nationally — the constraint is usually exposure, not existence. If the number feels small, the most effective lever is almost always widening the single criterion that costs you the most, which you can find in the breakdown above.
Ideal man vs ideal woman
The same criteria produce very different numbers depending on who you're describing, because the underlying distributions differ. A 6-foot minimum removes roughly a quarter of adult men but almost all adult women; a $100,000 income minimum cuts differently again. Building both is the quickest way to see which of your criteria is actually doing the work.
